Comment: What do you know about world news?

Do you keep up with the news? Watch it daily? Do you follow local news? World news? What do you do to stay informed?

I stay informed of world news through my friends and my Twitter feed. My friend Tim loves to tease me about not staying more informed on daily happenings around the world. He’s ready to discuss politics and world news at every moment. Sometimes our conversations start by him giving me the short version of the news that has happened (that I have missed or ignored) since the last time we chatted. Is this problematic? He always encourages me to stay more informed, but I admit that depressing world news is not my cup of tea.

I like to stay informed about local politics – elections, transit issues, community news. I always vote. I read up on Canadian federal election issues. I generally know what’s happening around the world, but it’s very surface-level. I read enough so that I know what my economics students are discussing. I encourage them to stay informed, read up on issues that they’re passionate about, and use their right to vote.

That said, in terms of global politics, I only have so much brain capacity for Trump news, so I ignore a lot of it.

Is this so wrong?

What about you?

I’m curious. How do you keep up with the news? What news outlets do you read/listen to? Do you and your friends discuss world issues and politics regularly?

Two for Tuesday: The White Christmas Tree

What do you think about white Christmas trees?

Each year, I consider investing in a white Christmas tree. There are so many in the marketplace at the moment, and a lot of them look so lush. And a white tree would fit perfectly into my home!

But every year, I end up with a live Christmas tree. I’m drawn to the smell, mostly, but I also like their irregular shape. Yes, having a live tree means there’s a lot of regular needle clean up, but what does it matter if I vacuum a little more than usual at this time of year? The live tree makes me happy, and my collection of ornaments stand out against the dark green.

Design: Cozy White Cabins

We got hit with an awful freezing rain and snow storm yesterday, which meant that it was the perfect day to decorate my home for Christmas, drink multiple cups of tea, and take a nap by the fireplace. It was a good day.

The dreary day also had me down an internet rabbit hole of cozy, white cabins. I’m a cottage person more than a cabin person, but you wouldn’t have to twist my arm to stay under soft blankets and reading all day if I had a gorgeous mountain cabin of my own!

There are several elements that these spaces share: warm white tones, textured fabrics, wood accents, and fireplaces.

What would be your must-haves in a cabin of your own?

Fashion: Christmas Earrings

It’s less than a month until Christmas (and almost December 1st), which means I can start writing about it on White Cabana. Right? I have been in the Christmas mood since I went to Christmas in Bayfield recently, then saw the Christmas market in Stratford last weekend. The Waterloo Park Festival of Lights opens this weekend, and next week is Christkindl in Kitchener.

I’ve noticed a few people wearing Christmas earrings already, so I thought I’d have a look around online to see what is available if holiday earrings are on your shopping list.

Many thanks to my friend Mary C. for inspiring this post. I was smitten with her gift bow earrings when we saw each other at Christmas in Bayfield!
