Christmas

Christmas: Santa Claus is Coming To Town

Since the big guy’s arrival is only a few days away, I thought it was appropriate to feature him today. There aren’t too many all-white Santa items on the market this year, but these these white-and-red Santas make for great gifts.

set of 4 Santa plates, $23.96USD, World Market; Santa serving bowl, $24.99USD, Bed Bath & Beyond

Christmas: Gingerbread Architecture

Oh, I wish I had the talent and patience to make and decorate a stunning gingerbread house like these ones. Aren’t they sweet pieces of gingerbread architecture?

Easier than spending days making a gingerbread mansion would be installing a gingerbread screensaver like this one via Jacquelyn Clark.

Christmas: Jingle Bells

Here’s another Christmas decor idea in case you’re looking for one – jingle bells!

These seven bells are from Canadian home decor shops that I’m sure you’ll love.

rustic Christmas bell, $14CAD (small), Monika Hibbs Home; set of three clay bells, $44CAD, Wills & Prior; rustic brass bells, $75CAD, Monika Hibbs Home; angel bell ornament, $8.95, Art of Home; sleigh bells cluster, $28CAD, Wills & Prior; terracotta bell ornament, $29CAD, LD Shoppe; gold hanging bells, $18CAD, Wills & Prior

Christmas: Fa La La Decor

Up to now, I have featured white Christmas stockings and white Christmas trees. among other Christmas-themed posts like decorating with garlands. And today is all about fa la la decor. Don’t these items just want to make you sing as you deck the halls? (See what I did there? :))

fa la la ornament, $18USD; fa la la mini spatulas, $14.95CAD (set of two); falala ornament, $6.95CAD; fa la la garland, $15USD; fa la la mug, $12USD; fa la la gift wrap, $6.99CAD; fa la la sponge cloth, $6CAD; fa la la mug, $5USD; tee, $19.99CAD

Christmas: O Christmas Tree

I have said for years that one year, I would forego all of my treasured ornaments from my travels in favour of an all-white Christmas tree. Each year, though, I can’t resist decorating my tree with my colourful ornaments. A cowboy boot from Dallas mixed in with a mini Vespa from Rimini with a side of clover-leaf angels from Ireland…how could I keep these sweet ornaments packed away?

That said, there are plenty of other opportunities to decorate with white each year. Wouldn’t a collection of white Christmas trees look festive on a sideboard or a fireplace mantel? Or even spread throughout a house? These 12 Christmas trees are delightful!

Christmas tree cookie jar, $98CAD, Pottery Barn; glass tree, $84CAD, Pottery Barn; tree serving bowl, $70CAD, Pottery Barn
white glitter tree ornament, $3.95CAD, Crate & Barrel; tree place card holders (set of 4), $42CAD, Pottery Barn; decorative ornament tree, $54.60; West Elm
tree candle, $14.95CAD, Crate & Barrel; bisque Christmas tree ornament, $5.95CAD, Crate & Barrel; glass tree, $19.95CAD, CB2
large bottle brush tree, $31.95CAD, Art of Home; 16″ fluffy tree, $35.96CAD, CB2; cone tree, $26.95CAD, Art of Home

Christmas: Decorating with Garlands

Do you decorate with garlands? If so, are your garlands fresh or faux? I don’t seem to have much consistency with garland decoration. Each year brings something different depending on my mood, available time, and greenery selection. This year, we’ve opted for real garland (a mix of cedar and pine) around our front entrance and faux inside. We’ve outfitted both garlands with loads of white lights. Overall, I definitely prefer real greenery for both inside and out.

The garlands in these homes are a mix of real and faux, over-the-top and simple.

Marketplace: White Christmas Stockings

Have you started to decorate for Christmas? I usually wait until December 1st, but we took advantage of some warmer weather a few weeks ago to decorate the outside of our home. We may get our Christmas tree this weekend, which would be lovely. A month of decorations suits me well.

Today’s round-up of Christmas stockings are all available at Canadian retailers.

I really quite like the Fa La La stocking! Do you have an instant favourite of this bunch?

Marketplace: Advent Calendars

What are your holiday traditions when it comes to advent calendars? Are you a classic chocolate lover? Do you opt for something else for you and/or your loved ones? I usually pick up a delicious chocolate calendar when I see something that looks delicious. The variety of calendars available in the marketplace seems to have exploded in the last several years. Now, there are calendars with beauty products, food items, ornaments, toys, and more!

Here are eight advent calendars that look unique. The Chanel calendar is quite the luxurious splurge at $825USD!

Merry Christmas

Thank you, dear readers, for joining me on White Cabana each day/week/month of 2020! My posts have been sporadic this year, but your comments, kind words, emails, and encouragement have been constant.

I wish you and your loved ones a very merry (and safe, distanced, Zooming) holiday!

A White Cabana Christmas includes a lot of red and green (shocking!). Here’s a look at the products of my new hobby (crochet). Pattern is by Daisy Farm Crafts.
There’s a bit of a debate among my bubble people (and on Instagram) about my tree topper. What do you think it is?

Merry Christmas!

Marketplace: Shop Local in Waterloo Region (and Beyond) This Holiday

I know many people are stressing the importance of shopping local this holiday season, and I’m eager, too, to share news of some of my favourite gift shops in the Waterloo region. (I’m sharing a few outside the region’s boundaries, too, because I want to.) So here we go…

Home

In the home category, I suggest the following shops:

  • UpMarket – a new shop with beautiful textiles (blankets, pillows, scarves), pottery, wood cutting/serving boards, Belmont Village
  • The Art of Home – a lovely selection of homewares, womenswear, kidswear, Cambridge
  • The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery – unique art (pottery, glass, jewelry), Waterloo
  • Porch Swing Candle – lovely scented candles, Waterloo
  • Wills & Prior – the most beautifully curated shop, new offerings include locally made pottery and wood items, Stratford

Clothes & Jewelry

In the clothing and jewelry categories, I suggest the following shops:

  • Erban Corner – high quality womenswear, many European brands, Waterloo
  • Hello Again – high quality consignment, Belmont Village
  • Channers – high quality menswear, Waterloo
  • Harmony – pretty, affordable, delicate jewelry, Waterloo
  • Frank’s Jewellers – high-end jewelry, Waterloo

Miscellaneous

And here are a few more shops that offer items beyond home and fashion:

  • Gifted – impressive selection of novelty socks, cute baby gifts, unique made-in-Waterloo items, the best selection of funny greeting cards, Waterloo
  • The Witty & Co. – impressive selection of specialty food items, beautiful items for the kitchen and entertaining, Cambridge
  • Charmed Flowers – pretty selection of flowers, Waterloo
  • Words Worth Books – independent bookseller with knowledgeable staff, Waterloo
  • Langdon Hall – my favourite, book a stay over winter to enjoy the fireplaces, Cambridge
  • Walper Hotel – unique boutique hotel in a prime location, Kitchener
  • local restaurants – consider supporting places like White Rabbit (Waterloo) in Waterloo and Grand Trunk Saloon (southern comfort food) in Kitchener
  • distilleries – Some distilleries like Kinsip offer more than just the usual stock of spirits. This year (like previous years), I’ve ordered several bottles of this delicious maple syrup

The Friday Five: Festive Drinks

Here are five festive drinks to enjoy over the holidays.

1.Hot chocolate. Oh, it’s a classic winter drink, isn’t it? My aunt made the best hot chocolate when I was little.

2. Hot toddy. A classic hot toddy combines whiskey, lemon juice, honey, and water. This recipe is an easy one to try. If you’re in the Waterloo region, I recommend the hot toddy at White Rabbit.

3. Mulled wine. This is a favourite at holiday gatherings I host. I generally make it by combining Ikea glogg with red wine. You can also buy this pre-made warm n cozy mulled wine from the LCBO or make your own with this recipe.

4. Apple cider. Hot apple cider is another great drink for a holiday party, especially as a non-alcoholic option. It warms you up, and it’s sweet!

5. Cappuccino. A slow morning during the holidays calls for a foamy cappuccino. Whip up the milk with an inexpensive milk frother and add cinnamon on top. Yum! Some people like to add a shot of Bailey’s or Amaretto to their cappuccinos, but I’m a traditionalist, so I opt out.

Gift Guide: Shop Local (Canadian)

I know blogger gift guides can get overwhelming and repetitive, but I promise you that this gift guide that Daniela put together for us is inspiring! Truly! Daniela was guided by the theme of “shop local” so the list includes only items that are Canadian. There’s a gift for everyone on your list.

***

Hello White Cabana readers!

I hope you are enjoying the many celebrations that surround us during the holiday season. And of course that you’re taking some time to pause and reflect in front of a Christmas tree with a cup of warm cocoa.

I am taking a bit of a turn with my gift guides this year and wanted to challenge our Canadian readers to support local shops this year or at the very least to learn about some amazing Canadian companies.

Many of the companies I have featured here manufacture, design, and produce their items all in Canada (and, yes, a few do outsource some of the steps). You will see the return of some of my favorite brands and some new ones I have stumbled upon this past year. Happy holidays and happy shopping!

Quebec-based La Grande Gourmandise offers beautiful gift baskets most of which are curated products from Quebec or elsewhere in Canada. With the purchase of any of their gift boxes/baskets a portion is redirected to a fundraising initiative called Youth Fund for School Perseverance.
I am featuring La Grande Gourmandise’s Big Hug box mostly because I like the name, but all their baskets are beautiful, so any item will be perfect for your recipients! The company ships anywhere in Canada and the USA.

Big Hug box, $65CAD

This next company carries everything from beds to wooden toys, teepees, baby and toddler toys and so much more. I stumbled upon Coco Village when I was looking for a low-to-the-floor bed when my first child was transitioning to a big girl bed. I love all of their designs and products, but my favorite bed is the teepee bed white top. If anyone has a child who is about to transition to a big kid bed, why not give it to him or her for Christmas? I highly recommend this one!

teepee bed, $699.99CAD

Have you ever thought of giving “labels” to someone for Christmas? Mabel’s Labels is a Canadian company that distributes labels. I know labels may be an unusual gift item, but if you have anyone on your list that goes to elementary school or daycare/nursery school or is active in sports/extra curricular activities, you can pick out some fun labels for them. Mabel’s Labels also has great personalized gifts, which are perfect for grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

school label pack, $42CAD, Mabel’s Labels
engraved ornaments, $9.99CAD, Mabel’s Labels

Although most of Roots‘s products are now manufactured outside of Canada their leather line is exclusively handcrafted in Toronto. The quality of their handbags, leather accessories weekenders, etc. is exceptional. New to their leather handbag collection is the Victoria tote, which is available in a number of colors.

Love Powered littles, femme, and teen box sets provide daily affirmations that keep you focused on positivity. These boxes are great gifts for anyone in your life. Parents can start the little affirmations as early as birth and keep them going throughout their children’s lives. A positive daily affirmation will create the right energy and the right attitude as you encounter life’s challenges.

I absolutely love Arc’teryx‘s Osanna coat in Morganite. It is a perfect everyday winter coat for our cold winters. Arc’teryx’s line is made in British Columbia, and so many products are worth your look. I have put a few of my favourite items below.

Osanna coat, $650CAD

Canadian based Mytagalongs has amazing travel accessories and tons of other stuff mainly geared towards woman. I love this mini backpack and the chargeable ear buds case. This would make a great gift for the teen on your list

Smash Tess has expanded its romper collection to include even more styles and colour options. The rompers feel soft and silky going on, and you never want to take them off! With matching romper options for kids, you can twin with your mini me

The Harris hoodie romper, $135CAD, Smash + Tess

Next up is another favorite brand of mine. It’s Vancouver-based Brunette the Label. The quality of this sweatshirt line is unbelievable, and I assure you will last for a long time. Have someone on your list who likes a more laid back New Year’s Eve? Then why not gift them this sweatshirt that has a little bling?

You could continue to support local businesses by purchasing this sweatshirt at Tiny Trendsetter (which offers delivery across Canada).

Rocky Mountain Barber has some great gift sets for men. Whether men are sporting the very trendy beard or just need an amazing Canadian product for everyday shaving, Rocky Mountain Barber has a perfect gift set for them.

Drake General Store is a great all around Canadian store where you are sure to find a gift at your ideal price point. Many products are made by Canadian artists. Here is a T-shirt great for a true patriot.

Two for Tuesday: Candles

Snowy weather, the Christmas season, and minimal sunlight makes for the ideal time to bring out the candles.

Wills and Prior generously offered this candle holder from Easy City Candles as a gift with purchase during a holiday shopping event, and I have since added a red taper candle to it. It’s a lovely design.

Pioneer taper bowl, East City Candles

East City Candles makes beautiful beeswax and soy candles as well as sleek tapers. A scattering of these pinecone candles would make for a beautiful table centrepiece.

Two for Tuesday: The White Christmas Tree

What do you think about white Christmas trees?

Each year, I consider investing in a white Christmas tree. There are so many in the marketplace at the moment, and a lot of them look so lush. And a white tree would fit perfectly into my home!

But every year, I end up with a live Christmas tree. I’m drawn to the smell, mostly, but I also like their irregular shape. Yes, having a live tree means there’s a lot of regular needle clean up, but what does it matter if I vacuum a little more than usual at this time of year? The live tree makes me happy, and my collection of ornaments stand out against the dark green.

The Friday Five: Ornament Collections

Do you have your Christmas tree up already? I’m hoping to get mine this weekend, and every year, unpacking all of my ornaments is one of my favourite times of the Christmas season. My tree is full of ornaments from all of my travels, so each piece brings back happy memories of my adventures abroad. (See a glimpse of it at #WhiteCabanaChristmas.)

If you’re looking to add to your ornament collection or pick up a perfect gift for a friend, read on! I have gathered ornaments around five themes.

Animal ornaments: tiger, $22.99USD (on sale); cockatoo, $11.95CAD; alpaca (set of 3), $16.05USD; giraffe, $24USD; sheep (set of 3), $14.04USD
Angel ornaments: glass angel, $3.99CAD; angel with trumpet, $9.99CAD; Swarovski angel, $159CAD; feather angel, $6.99CAD; mouse angel, $14USD
Santa ornaments: mercury glass santa, $6.50CAD; white santa, $4.19CAD (on sale); santa cloche (set of 3), $16.05USD; santa, $4.87USD; mercury santa, $7.99CAD
Ball ornaments: disco ball, $2.47CAD (on sale); fur ball, $3.99CAD (on sale); Swarovski ball, $56CAD (on sale); geometric ball (set of 3), $14.04USD; stripe ball, $4.04CAD
Nutcracker ornaments: nutcracker (set of 2), $17.98CAD; white nutcracker, $5.49CAD; wood nutcracker (set of 3), $14.04USD; bell nutcracker, $5.99CAD; silver nutcracker (set of 5), $26.99CAD

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Fashion: Christmas Earrings

It’s less than a month until Christmas (and almost December 1st), which means I can start writing about it on White Cabana. Right? I have been in the Christmas mood since I went to Christmas in Bayfield recently, then saw the Christmas market in Stratford last weekend. The Waterloo Park Festival of Lights opens this weekend, and next week is Christkindl in Kitchener.

I’ve noticed a few people wearing Christmas earrings already, so I thought I’d have a look around online to see what is available if holiday earrings are on your shopping list.

Many thanks to my friend Mary C. for inspiring this post. I was smitten with her gift bow earrings when we saw each other at Christmas in Bayfield!

Gift Guide: For Kids, Tweens, and Teens

Daniela’s back today with her fourth gift guide for the holidays (see her previous guides for the host/hostess, for men, for women). Today she’s sharing some ideas for the little(r) ones in your lives. It’s a long post, so get comfy!

***

This year I am taking a slightly different approach with my children’s guide. Rather than focusing on one age group, I’ve included all age groups and found many gifts that could overlap ages and stages. The ideas I share below are mostly in an age-related order, but they definitely could suit multiple ages. Happy shopping!

Minika is a Quebec based company that makes beautiful play gyms amongst other things for infants. Void of primary colours, these gyms can easily fit in well in most living rooms. Most importantly, Minika’s items are hand made without the use of any chemicals making them totally safe and natural.

I’m all about comfort for the little ones and isa&bella, a Canadian company, has set a high bar when it comes to making ethical and super comfy organic cotton clothes for your little one. Exciting things are coming in 2019 as the company will increases the sizes they carry. For now, the perfect little onesie and pants will make sure your baby is comfortable as they grow and explore all day.

Love Powered Co. is a Canadian company which was started by two mompreneurs who were looking for positive affirmation and mindful tools to bring into their homes and families. When they could not find them, they created Love Powered Co. Their beautifully packaged affirmation cards are of the highest quality. Who doesn’t love a gift that gives back? You may recall I featured Cuddle & Kind in my October #whitecabanawearspink gift guide, and I’m back featuring the company again because it is really making a difference. For every hand made doll purchased, Cuddle & Kind donates 10 meals through various humanitarian organizations (learn more here). I love the beautiful prints that can be purchased with the dolls, too. Not only do they have inspirational messages, but they make wonderful artwork for a child’s bedroom. I don’t think there is an age limit to this gift, but it is likely best for toddler to tweens!

Stella the Polar Bear, $65+CAD

Hudson the Polar Bear, $60+CAD

Calgary-based SÄ“m label was born out of the creator’s desire to pair sustainability and minimalism in fashion. You can read about owner Kelsey’s story here. SÄ“m label’s bamboo cotton items are beautiful and comfortable and come in sizes from infant to 7T. They will be a hit, and your recipients will never forget that it was you who gave them this gift as the pieces are too comfortable to take off!

raglan long sleeve romper, $58

Based out of Germany, Grimm‘s wooden toys are not only absolutely beautiful, but they are non toxic and made of wood. I wish I could buy the whole Grimm collection! For now, I’ll leave you with a few of my favorites. The building toys can make beautiful formations and are great for all ages because children can create more complex things as they grow.

Grimm’s Elements Building Storage, $99CAD

Grimm’s wood tunnel, $95CAD

The bath bomb craze is alive and well. Do you know a child or tween who loves bath bombs? If so, how about giving them this kit so they can make their very own bath bombs? The kit comes with everything they need to make six.

I love this bluetooth speaker by Bumpboxx that looks like a retro ghetto blaster for the tween and teen in your life. Sound and quality are optimal, and it comes in a variety of models. I love the small one best because it is compact, and you can choose from a variety of colors.

Daniela, you’ve done it again! You’ve curated a crazy cool collection of gift ideas for kids of all ages.

The Friday Five: Beaded Christmas Decorations

I really thought that I’d get crafty for the holidays, but so far, it’s not happening. One of the things I wanted to make is this felt garland. I also wanted to make some of these dolls. Needless to say, I haven’t started either project. Honestly, neither may happen. Maybe I should consider beaded items like some of the ones here.

Christmas: 16 Holiday Wreaths

Do you have a Christmas wreath tradition? Do you place one on your front door? Or on interior doors?

I have used an artificial green pine wreath on my front door for years. Since it’s plain, I switch up its decoration. For years, I used white pompoms. Recently, I’ve added a large, red bow. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it this year, so I’ve had a browse around for inspiration – to either add to my existing wreath or to consider a new option.

Here are 16 wreaths that would definitely bring a festive feeling indoors or out.

Kotinos wall wreath, $325CAD; Olea wreath, $125USD; lily of the valley wreath on stand, $185USD; golden lilies wreath, $58.95USD (on sale); golden wreath, $34.65CAD; glitter wreath, $32USD (on sale)

mini cone wreath, $28USD; starburst cone wreath, $38USD; double twig wreath, $98USD; pinecone wreath, $62CAD; pinecone wreath, $65.99CAD

frosty asparagus wreath, $68USD; wild cotton wreath, $98USD; glittered wreath, $101CAD; mixed berry wreath, $34.65CAD; artificial flocked pine wreath, $69.95USD

What is your favourite of this bunch? I’m leaning toward the Olea wreath and the wild cotton wreath.

Gift Guide: For Women

Have you been liking Daniela’s gift guides this year (for the host, for men)? She has a couple more to share, and I’ve had a sneak peek. Good things are on the way! Today she’s bringing us goodies for women, so you can get more things checked of your Christmas shopping list (or wish list).

***

Hi everyone. I’m back with a gift guide for that lady in your life – your friend, coworker, mom, or wife. This list has something for everyone! As usual, I’ve included items at a variety of price points. Many of these items fit nicely in the “what to buy 20-somethings” category, so if you are looking for a gift for your older daughter or niece, you’ll likely find a great item here. Happy shopping!

Not only does this VitaJuwel water bottle raise some attention, it has healing benefits due to  crystals that are contained in a clear glass vial. There are a few types of crystals, but I like this one best as it is a blend of amethyst, rose quartz, and clear quartz. These are known for their mind-easing benefits. Let the water sit for seven minutes before drinking. If you’re not into crystals, you can still buy it because it’s a really really nice looking water bottle.

VitaJuwel 5 elements gem water bottle, $98USD (also available at Anthropologie)

Brunette The Label is a company based out of Vancouver whose mission is to empower women to empower one another. The classic “brunette” and “blonde” sweatshirts are awesome, and if you know a mom who has a daughter, the brand carries matching sweatshirts in the kids’ collection. Who doesn’t love a mom and daughter in matching outfits?!

Brunette crew sweatshirt, $79CAD

Want to add a little bling to your go to sweatshirt? Their holiday collection comes in gold foil.

Blonde crew gold foil sweatshirt, $88CAD

Do you know someone who wants easy, quick, and effortless make-up because they just don’t have time for more? If so, then this “stick” is the perfect gift. It comes in a variety of shades; however, I am featuring the “nude” here as I think it is a good basic for every day. The Bite Beauty Multistick will apply like a cream and wear like a powder finish. The best part is that it can be applied to the lips, cheeks, and eyes,, making it easy to carry with you wherever you go.

Bite Beauty Multistick, $24USD, (also available at Sephora for $28CAD)

This next item on today’s gift guide is great for a person who loves bracelets (and especially “stacking” them!), and it also has healing powers. Handmade in the GTA and available at local markets across the GTA and online at Urth Elements Canada, these reiki-infused healing pieces promote healing, restoration, and uplift. In today’s hectic, fast-paced life, we sometimes need a little help to breathe and slow down to a calm state, so we don’t get overwhelmed. I think these are great gifts for the CEO – of a firm or of a household – in your life. These bracelets also make great gifts for teachers or university students who need to restore calmness in their lives.

natural gemstone bracelet, $25CAD, Urth Elements

Okay. It wouldn’t be a gift guide if I didn’t include my second favorite beverage-COFFEE! (Water is my first favourite beverage.) Finding a good coffee bean is important to me. It is the fuel for my day, and I love the taste of a well-brewed coffee. Since I have been finding it hard to get to my favorite coffee place after having baby number two, my husband and I started buying Barocco coffee as it is closer to home. After trying a few of Barocco’s blends, my go to is the Alto. Barocco coffee is available at a few retailers and online. It’s great to have this option to feed my coffee addiction, and I definitely think it is an awesome gift for any coffee lover.

Alto espresso, $32CAD, Barocco

Iconic, Canadian jeweler Birks has received more attention ever since the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle has been seen wearing some of the brand’s pieces. Birks has forever carried timeless, beautiful pieces, and it’s a Canadian company. This Christmas, for those of you wanting to gift your favourite lady a “little blue box,” opt to gift them a beautiful blue box from Birks…and make sure to pick out something beautiful to go into it! Here are a few of my suggestions.

freshwater baroque pearl and silver pendant, $350CAD, Birks

horizontal diamond bar necklace, $995CAD, Birks

My final suggestion is this beautiful organic Coyuchi robe that is perfection in my opinion. You may be interested to know that Coyuchi donates 1% of every purchase to help combat climate change. The company produces all of their organic natural products using minimal processing.

solstice robe, $73.50 (on sale), Coyuchi

If you haven’t already gathered, Daniela is an expert shopper! She’s always on the lookout for cool brands and products that make our lives better – health-wise and luxury-wise. I love that Daniela included Birks in today’s gift guide. Long before Birks became a Duchess fave, I remember going to Birks Sherway Gardens (in Toronto) with my mom when I was so very little. At the time, I found it annoying to look-at-but-don’t-touch cases of jewelry. Now, though, I definitely appreciate a beautiful jewel or two!

Christmas: Holiday Decor Inspiration

December is right around the corner, which means it’s time for me to start my holiday decorating. I’ve collected these images over the last few weeks, and they certainly inspire me to include greenery and simplicity in my decor this season.

Gift Guide: For the Host

Who has started holiday shopping? Who has finished? I have plenty still to buy, so Daniela‘s holiday gift guides could not have come at a better time! She always finds the most interesting things from great brands. Today she’s kicking off the 2018 White Cabana Gift Guide Series with a guide for the hosts.

***

It’s that time of year when many calendars are full of holiday drop-ins, dinners, and celebrations. Today I am sharing some gift ideas for the host and hostess, but I think think could also do well as stocking stuffers for an adult. These gifts for the host and hostess allow you to go beyond the norm of flowers and dessert. Happy shopping!

These white coasters are great because they suit any decor and are a perfect price point. Cocktail Emporium is an awesome store to check out if you are in the Toronto area. They have locations on Queen St. and in Kensington Market, and they really do have anything you can think of that is cocktail related.

If you’re heading to dinner at a foodie’s house, I suggest this Himalayan salt grater. It is sure to please your hosts.

And how cool is this pizza cutter?

I’m a sucker for a beautiful snow globe and Chapters Indigo always has an awesome selection this time of year.

I love my notebooks and notepads, and I can never have enough. If you know someone who appreciates good and fun stationery than Eighty Seventh St., a Canadian company, is the place for you. While you’re on the website, have a look at the holiday shop.

Marketplace: A Minted Christmas

This post has been sponsored by Minted. All opinions are my own.

If you’ve been a long-time reader of White Cabana, then you’ll likely know some of my favourite brands. Minted, the online marketplace for cards (and now art, fabric, and more!) has been one of my fave brands for quite some time. In fact, it was one of my first brand partnerships way back when White Cabana was just a newbie blog. While I have normally ordered cards and artwork, last year, I took a chance and ordered some fabric for my chaise. The fabric is beautiful. (You can read about my chaise makeover if you’d like.) I feel grateful that I can continue to work with Minted because I’m continually impressed by the work of Minted’s very talented artists.

Since it’s holiday time, it only makes sense that I now turn my attention to Minted’s collection of holiday items. I’ve worked with Minted for the last several years on my holiday card order. My favourite part of the ordering process is browsing through the card designs. This usually takes me a few days because I save a lot of designs in my favourites folder, and then eliminate them as I narrow down my preferences. I definitely put the filters to use to limit the designs by type (e.g., no photo, folded card) and colour (heavy on the white).

Once I’ve chosen my design, the rest of the ordering process takes minutes. Since I have an account, I simply need to write my greeting, review my saved-from-last-year recipient address list, and ensure my return address gets automatically printed on the back. Poof! Done! The order of cards arrives within days. Beautifully and safely packaged, I may add.

This year, I opted for the painted wreath designed by Baumbirdy of Chicago. You can see that the bow from the wreath is also printed on the envelope above the recipient’s address. How pretty!

While the original design had a holiday greeting in the middle of the wreath, I opted to remove it altogether, so that I’d have more white space on my card and the focus would be on the pretty wreath. I put my well wishes on the inside of the folded card. If you’ve ordered Minted cards before, then you’ll know that the text is quite customizable – wording, font, colours, spacing.

The pre-printed recipient and sender addresses option is amazing. I would recommend to pay the extra money for this option because not only is it beautiful, but it saves time. I’m a big fan of this option. Big. Huge. (Insert “Pretty Woman” emphasis.)

Besides these particular holiday cards, Minted’s holiday collection is lovely.

These non-photo cards were in my favourites folder for a long while.

Wintergarden by Kelly Hall

Merry Christmas, My Deers by Jinseikou (This one has been in my favourites folder for two years in a row. Look at this post from last year!)

Peaceful Reindeer by Gwen Bedat

A Nutcracker Christmas by Alexandra Dzh (this ended up being my runner-up option)

If you like minimalist photo cards, one of these designs might be for you. You’ll notice that you can even customize the card backing and envelope (at an extra cost).

Merry All Year by Pink House Press

Instant Gallery by Olivia Kanaley

In the business category of holiday cards, I like the following designs.

Stars by Lori Wemple

 Delicate Fern by Nicolette Myslinski

Holiday Wishes by Susan Moyal

Magnolia Wreath by Jennifer Postorino

If you’re feeling a touch overwhelmed by the holiday card selection process, why not order more than one design? I haven’t done this myself, but I have considered it. Can I also suggest that you order more cards that you think you need, too? Even though my address list is saved in my Minted account, I always seem to run out of cards. (Hmm…maybe I should spend more time working on adding things up more precisely.)

If you’re not sure how to upload and save recipient addresses, Minted has this guide to holiday cards which provides an easy overview of shapes and styles. I know there are a lot of cards to choose from, and uploading addresses may seem tedious, but once you’ve done it once, it’s done!

As I mentioned, Minted now offers much more than holiday cards to mark special celebrations. A few years ago, I ordered some table decorations to celebrate the completion of my PhD. The collection has now expanded beyond paper table runners. Now, for Christmas, Minted offers a cute selection of tree skirts, stockings, and wrapping paper.

Christmas Trees by My Splendid Summer

Birds and Flowers by Leanne Friedberg

I know the holidays are right around the corner, so you may have already purchased holiday cards and decor. On the other hand, if you’re behind schedule, have no fear. Minted’s delivery deadline schedule will help guide you, so you can reach your shopping goals!

Happy shopping!

Gift Guide: For the Host and Hostess

I’m so grateful that Daniela has taken time out of her very busy schedule to share four amazing gift guides on White Cabana. Her earlier guides, in case you missed them, focused on babies and toddlers, tweens and teens, her and him.  In this last guide, she’s sharing more original ideas for the host. Or, as she told me, thoughtful “just because” gifts. And, yup, that’s Daniela…always thinking of others!

***

Are you always stuck for what to bring to that dinner party or holiday drop-in? Or maybe you’re stuck on ideas for a small token for a teacher, coworker, or friend? This list is made up of affordable (under $30, with the exception of one!) items that cater to all types of people, but it is especially geared towards those drop-in visits and dinner parties we attend more frequently this holiday season.

Candles. Who doesn’t love a nice smelling candle? This one comes wrapped so nicely, so it’s ready for gift giving!

Ornaments are great for those of us who celebrate the holidays with a tree. An ornament is a thoughtful gift your recipients will remember you by year after year. These ones are monogrammed with an initial and can be given by first or last name.

The pineapple trend is still hot, and people are incorporating pineapples in home décor and accent pieces. This pineapple jar can be used for anything “dry,” or it can be left out empty. In addition to it being a trendy item, pineapples signify warmth, friendship, and hospitality. These are all the things you receive when going to visit friends and family over the holidays.

pineapple storage jar, $22.49 CAD (on sale), Well

The store Saje started off with only a few locations, but now you can find many all around. It has the best essential oils and aromatherapy items for home and body healing. No doubt this store will continue to grow and thrive as people are increasingly pursuing personal wellness. This great housewarming gift is priced just under $30.

Who doesn’t love a magazine subscription? The gift of reading is perfect every time. Start someone’s year off right with a subscription to Style at Home, since it is priced perfectly, and it’s gift that will have your friends thinking of you each month.

As a true coffee lover, I can’t start my day without two cups. I have to draw attention to my favorite coffee – Dineen Coffee Company. We drive here monthly to pick up a few bags of their beans which we grind at home each morning. When I say “we,” I really mean my husband. There is really nothing like a good quality cup of coffee. If you happen to be in the Toronto area, trust me, buying someone a nice bag of Dineen’s temperance roast will not disappoint. It truly is my favorite cup of coffee.

Dineen Coffee

I know that many people won’t be able to make it down to Toronto, so on the subject of coffee, if you have a coffee lover on your host/hostess list, this coffee maker is not only one of a kind, but it makes an incredible cup of coffee. It is on the higher end of my price point for a hostess gift. However, if you know someone who really loves coffee, they will thank you each time you visit by making an exceptional tasting cup. And, cool bit of info, this Chemex coffee maker is featured in the MOMA in NYC!

Oh my goodness, Daniela! You’ve shared another excellent gift guide today! Thank you! I hope you get spoiled this holiday season!

Two for Tuesday: The Amaryllis Flower

The Amaryllis flower (or plant) is one that comes out at this time of year. I’ve picked them up from the Kitchener market, and I love their bold form. I love the fresh variety, of course, but if this isn’t for you, there are certainly other options available such as artificial plants and artwork.

Gift Guide: For Her and Him

Last week, I introduced you to my cousin Daniela  and two of her holiday gift guides: babies and toddlers. and tweens and teens. She’s back this week with two more guides for us. And they’re just as good as what she brought as last week! Today, she is focused on the adults in our lives. Have a look!

***

Hey everyone. I’m here with an adult gift guide, and I hope you find lots of items for your loved ones. Or, you may ask Santa for something for yourself, too! I have!

What’s great about this list is that some these items can also make great gifts for that teen/university/college student in your life as well.

Reviews on the Tre wireless ear buds by Sudio say the sound is crisp, and they last for a long time with a single charge. They’re stylish and Swedish, so I think, all-in-all, they make a great gift for the tech lover/music lover/podcast follower in your group.

Tre ear buds, $93.75 (on sale), Sudio

Next up — my favorite insulated water bottle on the market. I bought my first one over a year ago and use it daily for both hot and cold beverages. I can attest to the length of time it keeps things hot and cold. It has never let me down. The hot actually lasts longer than 8 hours, and I can keep my warm lemon water all day at my desk. The other thing I love is that, true to its advertising, once washed, it does not hold the flavor of whatever drink was in it before. I can easily put water in it the day after having used it for coffee or tea. This bottle is from Canadian company Green’s Your Colour and comes in an array of colours. What’s special right now is the limited edition white versions which make great gifts for any adult on your list.

Anyone who has lived with me before-or worked with me for that matter-may run to buy me this amazing gadget. The Tile Pro is available at Best Buy, and it’s a great gift for those of us who lose/misplace our keys every day or every hour. The free Tile Pro app will locate that item you always seem to lose by emitting a loud sound. Santa, are you listening? I need one!

Tile, $45 CAD, Best Buy

Isn’t winter all about cozy chunky sweaters? This merino wool sweater from Aritzia is not only stylish for a night out with friends but equally cozy for a night in.

2017 seemed to be the year of the beard. If you have someone who is sporting this trend, this kit makes a great gift. Rumor has it that taking care of a beard is a lot of work. This all-natural Canadian-made beard kit is a perfect gift for that beard lover on your list.

The Northern Beard Company – The Revival Kit, $25.48 (on sale), Well

Journaling, becoming more mindful, and seeing andshowing gratitude in every day is proven to make us healthier not only in mind but in body, too. This is a great gift for that special someone in your life. It will help them create a daily habit of journaling and its rewards will be endless.

The Five Minute Journal, $26.95 CAD, Chapters Indigo

My last item is this trendy backpack by Matt & Nat for Indigo. Backpacks are now coming in various versions and styles. I love this one not only because it is sleek, modern, and a great size to fit all kinds of items, but it is also made from sustainable products. Both Chapters Indigo and Matt & Nat are Canadian companies which is an extra plus. Although this backpack seems to be featured for going to work or school, as a mom of a toddler, having two hands free has become quite important while also having (lots) of things accessible. I have this on my wish list, too. Hopefully Santa is reading this blog today.

Gift Guide: Tweens and Teens

I’m thrilled to welcome back Daniela to the blog. She’s at White Cabana with a 4-part gift guide series. Her first guide was all about babies and toddlers. Now, she’s back with plenty of great gift ideas for tweens and teens.

***

I always find tweens/teens a difficult age to buy for as these kids come into their own and develop their own taste/style and hobbies. However, this year, I am seeing some great go-to gifts to make that child/tween on your list smile.

Here is a selection of my favorite finds.

New shoes! The tried and true converse from even my childhood still remain a fan favorite and are great for all ages & come at a great price point.

Converse, $39.99 CAD, Sporting Life

Have you been seeing a lot of Unicorn items lately? Well you are not alone. Almost all retailers are incorporating some type of “unicorn” item into their shops. On that note, who doesn’t love a new pair of slippers? Check out this great cozy pair from Justice — a favorite store for children aged 8-12.

The all-natural ingredients of the Rocky Mountain Soap products make them great for all ages, but with this seasonal candy cane scent, it’s an extra win. Plus, who doesn’t love a bath bomb? This is sure to be a hit with the children in your life.

For the Star Wars enthusiast in your life…this may become the hot seller this season.

Gift Guide: For the Little Ones

I’m excited to welcome my cousin Daniela to the blog today. She has a 4-part gift guide series to share over the next couple of weeks, and I hope you’re eager to see what she has in store for us. Today’s gift guide is all about the babies and toddlers! Take it away, Daniela!

***

Hey everyone. As an avid shopper and someone who prides herself in finding just the right item for the many children on my shopping list, I am here today sharing with White Cabana readers some of the best items in my opinion for the baby and toddlers on your list this Christmas and yes…they are white or almost all white!

A hot item given the focus we are seeing today on mindfulness, self-care and starting this at a young age is the tee pee. This awesome gift not only looks great in any room but gives the child a place to have some quiet time, read a book or just enjoy some imaginative play.

teepee, Pottery Barn Kids

Make the base of the teepee extra cozy by adding this:

rug, Ikea

This special doll is perfect for children 18 months and up. In fact, my 2 1/2 year old daughter still prefers this to all her other dolls. It is the perfect fit for small arms and mimics a real baby which is wonderful for play and imagination.

doll, Mastermind Toys

Not only made from superior organic cotton but also Canadian made, these pjs are sure to become your toddler’s favorite. Do you have a future doctor or ballerina in the family? Then surprise them with a pair of these this Christmas.

pajamas, Playjamas

Want an extra special outfit for that special baby girl in your life? Let her sparkle in one of many options from Canadian company Little Lush Boutique. Although most of the store’s items cater to the little girls in your life, it carries awesome diaper/tie duos great for your next photo shoot that can be worn by both genders.

dress, Little Lush Boutique

Now for my favorite children’s Canadian clothing company. Their staples may be priced a bit higher than the norm however the wash and wear ability of this high quality clothing is far superior than many brands on the market. The organic cotton feels like butter, and you will find that whoever you buy these clothes for will want to wear them the second they are out of the wash. Again and again! Here is a selection of some of my go-to staples from Mini Mioche!

The Friday Five: Wrapping Presents

What’s your approach to wrapping Christmas presents? Do you plan a theme? Do you use wrapping paper or bags? Is everything colour-coordinated?

As for me, I keep things simple (are you that surprised?). I use one wrapping paper design and just a few bags. I keep ribbons and tags simple, too. My wrapping is basic, and Pinterest certainly makes me look like the worst wrapper ever.

Just look at these five beautifully wrapped gifts. Wouldn’t you love to receive one of these? I think I may consider improving my approach to wrapping next year.

Two for Tuesday: Gingerbread House

I don’t think I have ever decorated a gingerbread house. It wasn’t a yearly tradition in my family’s home, so if I did, it must have only happened rarely. These days, however, it seems like a lot of families make time to make and decorate sweet houses. Some are really elaborate and beautiful like the two in today’s two-of-a-kind.

Christmas: White Christmas Decor

It may come as a surprise to many of you, but when it comes to Christmas, I am quite traditional. I am always eager to get a real tree in my home (usually around December 1st), and I decorate with ornaments I’ve collected from my travels, and a few that I pick up locally each year. Other decorations around my home are from my childhood, belong to my growing collection of reindeer, or are part of my growing Christmas Spode collection (Am I too young to have a Christmas Spode collection? Nah!). You can see some of my decorations on this guest post I wrote for Rox-Anne at Celebrating This Life last year.

All this said, I’ve noticed a lot more white trees and Christmas decor floating around blogs, Instagram pages, Pinterest, and magazine spreads. They’re absolutely beautiful, and I commend those who embrace an all-white Christmas!
