The Friday Five: Bedrooms

It’s Friday! Who is excited for the weekend?

I’m a month into my new job and it’s been going great. I love the work and I love where I’m living in Waterloo. What I could use is a bit more sleep-in time. Days are busy with work and nights and weekends have been busy with prepping for my dissertation defense (11 days!) and planning out home reno projects. Who can sleep-in when there’s all this excitement? There are boxes stacked in my bedroom so, at the moment, it’s nothing like what a serene bedroom should look like. Soon enough, right? I’m hoping that by the end of September I will feel much more settled.

Interiors: A Gstaad Garage

I have been lucky enough to have spent quite a bit of time in Gstaad, Switzerland. The area is beyond beautiful what its typical chalet style housing and the lush green mountains in everyone’s “backyard”. It is a really special place for me filled with so many happy memories.

Every once in a while I check in on Gstaad real estate. Not that I’m going to be investing there anytime soon (um…prices are ridiculously high) but real estate sites are great for showcasing an area’s architecture, style, and for giving us curious folks a glimpse into how people around the world live.

The garage below is an example of what I mean. It’s so darn clean! With flowers, a floor-to-ceiling window, and floors that shine. Isn’t it amazing?

Uptown: A Little Bit of Progress

I thought I would take a moment to talk about the updates I’m making around my house Uptown. It feels great to be in Kitchener-Waterloo and I’m really loving so many things about my new house. I’m learning new things about renos and home repairs, I’m getting to know every home improvement store in KW, and little-by-little I am making my house feel more like me.

There are three bathrooms in my house. They’re great spaces but they are all covered in wallpaper. The wallpaper in the upstairs bath came off quite easily and left no wallpaper paste residue. The walls up there are in great shape and just need some minor touchups (of that plaster/putty stuff) before they get primed and painted.

upstairs-bath-wallpaper

upstairs bath – wallpaper removal fun

The powder room was a whole other story. The decorative paper came off without any trouble. But…the wallpaper paste decided to stay behind. The look was disgusting. The removal was a major pain.

powder-room-before

powder room – before – two patterns of pink & cream wallpaper

wallpaper-removal-progress

powder room – the wallpaper paste disaster

My dad bought and applied some wallpaper paste removal but that didn’t work. Then I found two solutions via Google so I alternated between them: (a) hot water + fabric softener + baking soda, and (2) hot water + vinegar. The vinegar solution worked better in the end, I think, but the fabric softener solution smelled better so I kept using it. There was A LOT of scraping involved. And A LOT of rubbing with a rough sponge. And A LOT of cleaning up with a soft sponge. It was time consuming*. The walls look half-way good now but of course there are (more than) several areas that need putty. The powder room looks much brighter so that’s definitely something to celebrate. Removing the wallpaper in this room was a huge job and I’m glad it’s over. (One more bathroom to go.)

IMG_5448_2

My parents came for a visit this past weekend and with my mom’s help I’ve narrowed down my paint colours down to two! Huge accomplishment! I’ve been staring at the paint chips in every room in the house in different lights over the last month or so. Now I’m going to buy small test cans of each colour and paint large patches in each room. I hope by doing this, I’ll come to a final decision about the colour. In case you didn’t know – I’m painting my whole house white. All of it. Yes.

paint-choices

paint options with tile and carpet

I picked up pretty white tiles that I will eventually use for my kitchen backsplash**. The tiles look great with the paint options and the existing cabinets (Ikea I think). So far.

I’m still dating my couch options. I love the Lee couch but I priced it out for two fabrics and one will be $3000 and the other one will be $3800 (plus tax & delivery). I’m not sure I feel like spending $4000 on a couch.

Lee-Industries-English-sofa

I am really fond of the following two sofas from sofa.com but I have to do the final pricing on each. They’ll likely come in around $2500 or so.

Restoration Hardware has a nice option too. It would like be around the $3000 mark. I haven’t yet seen this one in person but I will soon enough. I really would prefer two large seat cushions but I don’t the the RH sofa has this option.

prod1622099

Alternatively, I could also go the more affordable route with Ikea’s Karlstad in a couch or sectional style.

Karlstad-sofa-Ikea

The Karlstad is a good-looking and comfortable sofa but it has a different feel than the ones above. It would change the whole look of my living room. Oh – and I’m aiming for a light grey fabric for my future sofa. Thoughts?

My parents helped me plant outside. I’m leaving all the gardening choices up to my mom since she is a retired florist. She knows what’s what. I only requested that hostas be in my garden since (a) I think hosta is a funny word, and (b) it seems like everybody is always talking about where they planted their hostas, the colour of their hostas, and how their hostas are growing. I think it’s hilarious…and I want to be part of the hosta club. I don’t have a big garden but I have just enough patches of land to let me play around.

My proudest moment so far in this reno business has been installing a new kitchen light. I wasn’t sure I could manage it on my own but I did! I watched a few how-to videos online (and over the years I’ve observed my dad change a few) and then I got to work. I learned about my Breaker Box and I made sure I shut off the right breaker switch for the kitchen light. I set up lamps around the room so I could see what I was doing (I decided to change the light at 9pm or so?!). I used one screwdriver in the whole process. So handy. After the electricity was shut off, I removed the existing fan/light fixture and unhooked the wires. Once the fan was down I put up my new light. Black wire to red wire and white wire to white wire. I used plastic screw caps to attach the wires. A few screws later and my light was up! When I switched the power back on I really was praying that I’d have light. And guess what? I did! I honestly couldn’t believe it. Changing a fixture is not hard at all but it is a little scary, what with the electricity bit. But as long as the electricity is off, there’s nothing to worry about. Right? So, one light installed and about 15 more to go! (I haven’t narrowed down the choices for the other rooms.)

So there you have it – a few updates from around the house. Much more to come so stay tuned!

*Note to self: Never install wallpaper. Ever.

**You may be wondering why I bought backsplash tiles before doing anything else? I found them for a super deal on Kijiji and I couldn’t let them go! More on that in a future post.

Design: Blog Headers V

And here’s another round-up of lovely black and white blog headers…and some extra reading material for your holiday Monday (in Canada). Like the other posts in this series, most of the content of these blogs are very colourful, which is why I’m extra glad to see them have such simple black and white headers. I love the variety of fonts that have been used in these headers.

The Friday Five: Bathrooms

I have a feeling I’m going to be talking about bathrooms for quite some time here. Let me know if you’re bored. I’ve got two bathrooms in my house that I need to do something with. I’ve ripped off the wallpaper and although I don’t have the budget to do full-on makeovers, I do need (want) to do some updating. I’d like to replace the vanities in each bathroom asap. The paint, faucets, and lighting are also pretty big priorities. Eventually I’ll replace the floors and figure out a better use of space in the main bathroom upstairs. I’ve been floating around online searching out some great white bathrooms for inspiration. Mine are going to be white…no surprise there.

In this first space I love the free-standing tub. This is definitely on-trend for 2013 (and a few years after that, I predict). My own main bath is big enough to do the same so when I get more money (a big lottery win?) I may consider doing something like this. It’s so sleek!

Mandatory Credit

Town Hall Hotel

In this second bathroom I love the thought of putting the mirror over the wall of windows. The windows act as an artistic backdrop for the gorgeous gold mirror.

white-bathroom-via waterworks

via The Perfect Bath

I think the layout in this third bathroom is pretty unique. It looks like the shower was installed in between the two vanities. I think this is a pretty interesting use of space.

TIME-20

via Style at Home

The fourth bathroom has the most incredible window and molding details. It’s just so striking. The vanity seems too small for the space and the grand ceilings though. What do you think?

10-juliecharbonneau

Finally, in Sarah Richardson’s design, the tiling is an obvious eye-catching statement. I love the shades of white used in this space and the vanity is beautiful. But am I the only one who thinks that the sconces and mirrors are completely out of proportion in this space?

So, I’m curious – what are your essentials for a worthwhile bathroom reno? Do you go for the whole room or is it possible to update the space without tearing out all of the existing fixtures?

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! It’s a long one here so I’ll see you back on Tuesday if I am too relaxed to post on Monday!

Art: Saatchi Online

If you follow me on Instagram and Twitter then you know that I’ve got painting on my mind. That is, I’m determined to paint all the walls in my new house white. Which white? Not sure. I’m still working that out. While I am eager to get painting, I am also thinking about future artwork and placement. I have a ridiculously big main bathroom and I think a large striking piece of artwork would be perfect in the space.

There are some great sources of art online and in stores at every price point. Saatchi is one such online retailer that carries a wide selection of originals and prints. Here you can shop online for picture collages, mosaics, photography, and even sculpture from artists around the world.

Design: Paris Hotels

I recently learned that I’ll be off to Paris for about a week in February. I can barely believe it. While I have been to Paris many times I am always eager to return. To say I’m excited about this trip – yes, even though it’s in the winter – is an understatement! I’m just thrilled!

I’ve been having some fun researching hotels all over Paris. There are some amazingly beautiful spaces out in Paris that I’m just drooling over. And now you can too…

The Friday Five: Waterworks

I have bathrooms on the brain these days since I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in my own removing strips and strips of wallpaper. Waterworks is an amazingly beautiful bathroom store and their online shop is just as gorgeous. Some of the prices I find completely hard to justify but, oh jeez, are these bath items ever good looking!

Art: White Bouncy Castle

When my friend Anita sent me the link to this art installation my jaw dropped…and then I had the urge to book a flight to Berlin to see it – and jump on it – in person!

white-bouncy-castle-art-installation-20130627-121311-243

The White Bouncy Castle is the work of artist William Forsythe and is open to visitors of Berlin until July 14. Although the exhibit has travelled to a few places since 1997 it has yet to make its way to Canada. I’d say now is a good time!

white-bouncy-castle-art-installation-20130627-121318-486 white-bouncy-castle-art-installation-20130627-121237-085

Mr. Forsythe has quite the bio. Raised in New York, he trained as a ballet dancer in Florida and danced and choreographed all over the world. He has created numerous films and installations, has lectured at universities and cultural institutions around the world and is also the creator of The Forsythe Company. Oh – and he also holds an honorary doctorate from The Julliard School in NYC. Simply impressive!

The Friday Five: Treasure Boxes

I have many little boxes around my place that hold everything from jewelry to safety pins to coins. I find they are quite useful as well as decorative. But I’m curious, do you have a collection of treasure boxes? What do you use them for?

Fashion: Elizabeth & Clarke Subscription Shirts

You know that good things come in threes, right? Well, I was lucky enough to be on the receiving end of three great tops from new-to-me designer Elizabeth & Clarke based out of NYC.

Elizabeth&Clarke-logo

I love the simple logo.

Elizabeth & Clarke is a clothing company that specializes in neutral-coloured shirts for women. (Right up my alley, I know!) Elizabeth & Clarke works by subscription meaning that if you’re a subscriber, you will receive a new box of shirts delivered right to your door every three months…as each new season begins. There are three subscription options. The “serious clotheshorse” receives 3 shirts per season at $20 each. The “busy modern lady” receives 2 shirts per season at $25 each. And the “woman who hates to shop” receives 1 shirt per season for $30.

Elizabeth&Clarke_box

In the summer box, I received The Arden (white), The Liz Lemon (white) and The Hurley (black) (all named after famous Elizabeths in case you didn’t realize). I’m usually a bit hesitant to buy clothes online because I can be quite particular about fabric but these shirts did not let me down.

P1000939

Elizabeth & Clarke’s The Liz Lemon t-shirt, Levi jeans, Nine West shoes, Fossil watch, vintage necklace

So, what’s my verdict? Well, here is what I am impressed with:

– The Liz Lemon t-shirt and the The Hurley are made of such soft cotton that I didn’t want to take either of them off! They hang nicely and are both really easy to wear.

– The size chart works very well. I like the sizes I got because they leave room for a bit of shrinking (which I always end up doing even when I try not to) but I could have gone down a size and they would have been just fine.

– The service I received from the Elizabeth & Clarke staff was perfect. Friendly, respectful and efficient. The box of shirts was wrapped really nicely too!

– The shirt styles are classic and modern (that combo exists, right?). I can easily pair each shirt with existing pieces in my wardrobe and – I know I’m biased – but nothing really beats a cool white shirt!

– I love the subtle back pleating detail of The Arden and I wish I had captured it in a photo. It’s the little touches that count, right?

– All three shirts have washed well. Washer + dryer. Easy.

Here is something that could be potentially annoying:

– The Arden suffered from static cling unfortunately. You can’t tell in the photos above but it basically stuck to my jeans. Maybe after another wash or two the static cling will disappear. It also needs ironing so if you hate ironing, this isn’t the shirt for you. (I like ironing so this doesn’t bother me.)

Overall – like I said at the beginning of this post – I’m very pleased with the three shirts and I’m already looking forward to the fall collection – hello elbow patches!

Many thanks to Melanie Moore, co-founder of Elizabeth & Clarke, for sending these shirts my way. Photos by Jordana.

Marketplace: Decorium

A couple of weeks ago I attended the opening of Decorium‘s new Toronto showroom – located in the heart of Rosedale. Decorium is one of Toronto’s go-to hot spots for well-designed, high quality furniture and accessories for the home. Founded in 1986, Decorium offers its customers a collection of unique furnishings from around the world. The Yonge St. showroom proved to be a wonderful space to feature the cleverly curated collection of home furnishings. It was also an inspiring place for a party!

The event was wonderfully organized and Chef Warren and his team spoiled attendees with a delicious selection of food (mushroom ravioli, poutine, stir fry, oysters, etc.) and deserts by Bite Me Bakery were perfectly suited for the event.

Marketplace: Violette Boutique

I was in Victoria, British Columbia for the first time last week to present at an academic conference. Usually when I travel – for work or pleasure – I tend to plan ahead, make note of a few things I want to see, and have a map (or two?) in hand. This time, however, I was completely overwhelmed with life that I basically boarded the plane without a clue as to where I was really going (shame, I know).

When I ventured downtown after work one day I was pleasantly surprised by Victoria’s lovely shops and the wonderfully friendly people I met. I was directed to the jewelry store Violette, for example, from the saleswoman in Emporia after I told her about my obsession with white (what, doesn’t everyone talk to strangers about their favourite colour?).

Violette-Boutique-Victoria-British Columbia

I walked into Violette and I instantly knew it was my kind of place and space. Violette is a bright, white, clean, and spacious jewelry store that is well-designed, welcoming, and, best of all, features some really beautiful collections from designers such as Gabriela Artigas, OGJM, Alexis Bittar, and Giles & Brother

Sub zero zig-zag

Sub Zero is a refrigeration industry brand that might as well be royalty- it’s not just fancy for fancy’s sake, the guts are where the glory is. Today’s feature is the cool Z-Refrigerator that employs a very unique shape for storing various items: when the door is opened to the left, a large space is available and to the right is a slot for drinks and instant food.

The fridge also saves energy by minimizing the amount of cold air escaping at once. And yes, it’s an award-winner of the 2013 iF Design award for concept design by Hee Young Lee. How cool.

The Friday Five: My Mom’s Favourite Websites

Today I thought I’d highlight some of my mom’s regular go-to websites. After she stops in at White Cabana (her first stop online, obviously), she clicks onto these sites (yes, usually in this order) to see what’s going on around the world…

1. 8foot6. This is a daily read for my mom, my sister, and me. The three of us lead very different lives but Shannon at 8foot6 appeals to us all. My mom, sister and I often touch base and discuss Shannon’s daily updates (Shannon – if you’re reading this – we seriously do talk about all the goodness that you’ve got going on in your home!). We love Shannon’s home, her photos, and her growing Pyrex collection. We are also impressed with how much she manages to do with two toddlers in Toronto.

2. The Enchanted Home. My mom loves following this blog and often gives me the update about what changes Tina (the author) has made to her incredible home or what new orchids or plants she has placed in her massive collection of blue and white ceramics. Tina’s home is not just gorgeous – it’s pretty spectacular. She has amazing taste in fabrics and decor and watching her build her house from start to finish was a real treat for us readers.

3. My French Country Home. My mom’s third (well, fourth if we count White Cabana) stop around the internet is My French Country Home. My mom keeps me informed about Sharon’s horses and her tours of the brocantes (flea markets) in France. Like Tina, her property in Normandy is pretty incredible.

4. After White Cabana, 8foot6, My Enchanted Home and My French Country Home, my mom usually clicks on the blogroll (aka the list at the side of the blog) at My Enchanted Home to see what else might be interesting on a particular day. Often she clicks onto French Essence.

5. Kijiji and Craigslist. My mom loves Kijiji and Craigslist. She has dragged me to who knows where to buy who knows what random one of a kind item for her home. She entertains me with her incredible searching skills. Honestly. My mom can find anything you need at an incredible price. It’s a talent like I’ve never seen before. Her determination and persistance in finding beautiful high quality items at incredible prices is really to be admired.

The Friday Five: Bathrooms

I love the variety of design in the bathrooms that I’m featuring in today’s Friday Five.

1. The tendency is toward vintage in this bathroom’s design. The art-deco chandelier, the simple mirrors, and the marble counters make this bathroom a winner from top to bottom.

2. This bathroom is modern, modern, modern. The artwork, the shower faucet system, and the floating sink and toilet make this bathroom sleek and clean.

3. Exposed plumbing is one of the things that I’m attracted to in this bathroom. The simple oval sconces seem to add an industrial feel to this space.

4. Shimmer and shine through the use of glass doors and walls makes this bathroom modern. The hard-edge tub and the simplicity of the stand alone faucet are two of the many elements in this space that make it stand out.

5. My favourite feature in this bathroom is actually the window because it reminds me of France. I love the addition of the antique scale and the simple light ball fixture over the sink. It’s a little bit rustic and a whole lot of calm.

Travel: Mexico City

by Troy

I came to Mexico City for Zona Maco – the largest art fair in Latin America. The artwork was incredible.

Troy at Zona Maco, Mexico City

While I had a lot of professional responsibilities and I didn’t get to visit the numerous museums I did get to do a bit of exploring in the neighborhoods of Condesa, Roma Norte and Polanco.

Mexico City reminded me a bit of Brussels – lots of different styles of architecture from many different decades – from 19th century to 70’s brutalist to hyper-contemporary. Unlike Brussels, Mexico City is enormous.

I hope you enjoy some of my snapshots…for “Cabaña Blanca”.

The Friday Five: Living Rooms

Let’s end the week with inspiration from five gorgeous living rooms. The ceilings, the furniture, the windows, the lighting…these all do their part to make these rooms inviting and gorgeous. Yes?

Art: Mindy Shapero

Los Angeles-based artist Mindy Shapero creates unique forms that are both structured and organic. The first piece below is made from hand-cut dura-lar (polyester film), latex caulking and steel and the second sculpture is made of a fiberglass shell and hand cut dura-lar. It definitely takes real talent to combine such ingredients into such beautiful pieces of art.

Design: Queen’s Human Media Lab

I am so happy to share the news of the Queen’s Human Media Lab designed by Karim Rashid because not only am I happy to shine the spotlight on Queen’s (I did my Master’s there) but I’ve been a fan of Karim Rashid for quite some time and I just love that he did his part to increase the hipness factor at Queen’s. The Human Media Lab’s sleek modern space offer a nice contrast to the traditional stone buildings that make up the majority of the buildings on campus.

office1

The Human Media Lab is located in Jackson Hall and the almost 2500 square feet space  includes a workspace, office, kitchen and corridor. The space is coming up to its one year anniversary in May. The space was designed by Karim Rashid and his team (including Camila Tariki, Evan McCollough, Kamala Hutauruk, and Juliette Hyunju Lee).

From my perspective (aka the perspective of a professional student), I love that the workspace includes a large meeting room for collaborative tasks, pods for individual work. The curved walls and windows are a stark contrast to the typically linear styles that are in traditional buildings.

windowshapes2

windows at the Human Media Lab, Queen’s University

The Human Media Lab concept, Karim says, “is an open space with work stations that allow a flexible, interactive space where digital and physical can merge to shape and experiment and inspire. The design also allows the offices to close off to afford intense focused work”. Intense focused work – yes!

This space is so futuristic! There’s an interactive display with gesture technology. What does this mean? It means that people use in-air gestures to move objects around the wall-sized display screen. In addition, when people in adjoining cubicles are looking at each other, the translucent glass between them becomes transparent for communication. How does this happen? Two words: eye trackers. Cool!

The Friday Five: Bookcases

I am currently drowning in work. There’s a lot going on in my PhD life at the moment – all exciting and challenging stuff – which means that my eyes are tired from reading, my brain hurts from thinking, and I fear my fingers will soon be stuck in a perma-typing position. So, in the spirit of hard academic work, today’s post is all about fabulous home libraries.

Happy Friday everyone! Enjoy a wonderful weekend!

Travel: Dordogne, France

In the past, I managed to take a trip to Europe once a year…for study or work purposes or for family gatherings. Unfortunately these last few years, I haven’t had the chance to go. I know, how spoiled am I? I don’t mean to whine but I certainly have been dreaming of France these last few months. I miss the food, the people, the fashion, and the cobble-stone streets.

A friend recently sent me a link to this place – Les Jonquilles in the Dordogne – where she’ll be spending a couple of weeks this spring. Browsing the photos made me instantly want to book a trip. I love the simplicity of this home. It’s both rustic and modern and who can resist a typically French white bistro set? I can almost smell the fresh countryside air!

The Friday Five: Kitchens

I don’t know about you but I spend many hours staring at photos of kitchens for no real good reason. The kitchen in my apartment is white (phew) so it’s not like I need to paint cabinets or renovate. And my NYC and Toronto family members all have white kitchens so when I visit them I always feel happy to be in their kitchens (It’s not like I’m against visiting colorful homes, I swear). But, still, I just love seeing stylish kitchen design.

So, speaking of gorgeous white kitchens, shall we drool over some this weekend? Yes, I think so.

What are you cooking this weekend? Or, will you be painting cabinets white perhaps?

Stationery: Daniella Marie Stationery & Design

Contrary to what some believe, invites, in my opinion, are one of the most important details of a wedding. They set the tone for the whole affair and they are the first thing to welcome your party guests. Canadian blogger and designer Daniella Marie recently opened up her stationery and design business and her wedding invite collection (it’s letterpress, of course!) is just beautiful.

Furniture: Decor-Rest

Let’s shine a spotlight on a successful Canadian furniture manufacturer this morning, shall we? Since 1972 Decor-Rest has provided customers with quality products and a commitment to honest service. Decor-Rest is headed by owners Angelo and Christina Marzilli and the company currently occupies a 200,000 square foot plant located in Woodbridge, Ontario as well as a 8,000 square foot industry showroom in High Point, North Carolina. And you can bet that Decor-Rest is filling up their furniture retailers with thoughtfully-designed furniture. In addition to manufacturing the collections of Steven & Chris and Cobi Ladner (cobistyle), Decor-Rest’s inventory includes fabric and leather upholstered sofas and chairs as well as accent items to suit contemporary and traditional styles.

The Friday Five: Would You Buy This?

Would you buy any of these it’s-puzzling-to-me items…and actually use them?

This is Muji’s lunch box band. I have no idea what a lunch box band is. Help?

I really have no desire to spend an extra few minutes massaging my jaw line with this Muji (yes, again) creation. Do you?

What would make you want to spend money on a set of plaster teeth?

I’m not quite sure how this vest/tank-top really tones? If it does in fact tone then there really is no excuse for not having a six-pack, right?

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Design: Michelberger Berlin

I must have travel on the brain (again) because I keep being drawn to very cool hotels. Today we travel to Berlin and check into the stylish Michelberger Hotel.

I’ve travelled a fair bit around Europe (most often Switzerland and Paris: read this, this, this, this, this, this, and this) but I have yet to visit Berlin. What do you think? Should I add it to my travel wish list?

Travel: Expedia Ad Campaign

I just love this ad campaign created by Ogilvy & Mather for Expedia. Clever, clever, clever!

But then again, it’s not like I really need an ad campaign to convince me to travel. My passport is always ready! (And fyi – I most often than not use Expedia for flight, car and hotel bookings because it’s cheap, convenient, and provides good customer service.)
