Event: My Floridian Vacation

Well, well, two weeks sure can fly by! How have you all been? Thanks to those of you who continued to visit the blog and who said hello on Twitter while I was away.

I had a most excellent vacation in Florida over the last two weeks – I soaked up plenty of sun (yes, I wore sunscreen), swam every day, did “some” shopping, and ate delicious meals. Today’s photos are a bit random but there you have it – it is Monday after a vacation after all!

My family has been a fan of Madeira Beach ever since I was 6 or 7 years old. I loved being there as a kid and I still love it after all these years. It’s one of the few places I can completely relax. It’s easy living and the people are nice. In addition, the Gulf of Mexico is gorgeous, the beach is well-maintained, and the sand is squeaky clean (yes, it actually squeaks!). My friend Shannon and I stayed at Ocean Sands – the best place in Madeira as far as I’m concerned (and not just because it’s white).

As with many beach town shops, the clothing is bright and bedazzled. I managed to find one white t-shirt at John’s Pass.

I wish I counted the YOLO sightings over the two weeks we were in Florida. Every other person seemed to have it emblazoned on their t-shirts.

We also saw some interesting signage in our travels…

At first we thought the sign (above) spelled “right” incorrectly. But then we realized that maybe the sign was supposed to say “straight”. Maybe. Either way, it amused us.

This isn’t how we spell pretzel in Canada.

Finally. Way to go Marshalls for this little touch in the dressing rooms.

I wish we noticed this sign (above) last year – we were pretty much attacked by seagulls as soon as we stepped foot on the beach with our ice cream cones. This year we knew better.

We had some fun with an underwater camera. And we definitely stayed within the limit.

I’m not sure what they teach in driving school down south but I’m 100% sure it’s fully unsafe to sit on a lawn chair in the back of a pick-up truck.

Aptly named Perfect, this motor home model includes air conditioning, a full bathroom, luxurious finishes and – wait for it- a garage in the rear to take your Smart car with you. So when you do arrive at your destination you can park big daddy and slip away like an action film trick aboard your zippy compact wheels. So you never have to walk-!

It’s priced at $1.4 million, but really- who cares. It’s perfectly insane and I’d love to experience it.

While in Boston, I spent a couple of hours at the newly renovated Museum of Fine Arts. It was glorious! If you find yourself in Boston, I urge you to visit the museum. Food: Sweet Cupcakes in Boston

Although lovely Sweet cupcake shop was right around the corner from the hotel I stayed at in Boston, I didn’t have a chance to actually ever make a purchase. I took a few pictures of the white (and pink) shop as I passed by early one morning but I regret not going back to treat myself.

Lately I haven’t had much time to hit the stores in my city but on my recent trip to NYC I did take a very quick tour of the shops on 5th Avenue (I know – I feel very lucky). These gorgeous fabrics and intricate patterns from Louis Vuitton and Zara caught my attention…but I ended up leaving NYC without even one purchase (unbelievable, right?).

The Friday Five: Boston Architecture

As Johanne pointed out earlier this week, I’ve recently gone on a bit of a tour of cities. My week of travel included a visit to Boston and, as always, I was on the lookout for white. While many of the buildings in this friendly city are constructed of red-brick, I did spot several beautiful white structures as I went about my explorations. Here are five white structures that caught my eye.

Travel: Bayfield, Ontario

If you live in Southwestern Ontario and are anything like me then you must certainly be loving the weather we’ve been having lately. I am loving it! The winter hasn’t been horrible this year but at the first sign of warmth and sunshine, I just love spending as much time as possible outside. One of the things I love about living in London is its close proximity to a few gorgeous beaches. On Saturday I decided to jump in the car and head toward water – to Bayfield to be exact (one of my favourite destinations). It felt so good to put my feet in the sand and get a feeling of the (cold) lake water.

Travel: Scenes from New York

First, let me take the time to wish you all a happy new year! I hope you celebrated the new year in style! As for me, well, I celebrated the arrival of 2012 in NYC! I know some of you might be expecting me to tell you about a wild night I had in the city but my New Year’s Eve was quite low-key. After my sister and I fed and bathed my cute little nephews and put them to bed, we changed into pjs, watched a movie, and listened to the party goers outside making their way to Times Square. We watched a bit of the Times Square coverage on tv which was bizarre (because it was only a few blocks from where we were) and at midnight I opened the window and listened to the sounds of people’s noise makers and cheers down on the street below. It was a great evening and I felt happy and lucky to have spent it in NYC with my family. I hope your night was just as you had wanted it to be.

As you may have noticed, I have been away from the blog for a few days – what with the holidays and travel and all that, I haven’t really had much of a chance to blog. Things will get back to normal soon, I promise. For now, I am happy to share with you some images of the things I’ve seen so far in New York City.

The Friday Five: Memories of Switzerland

Every fall I host a reunion with the people I worked with over various summers in Switzerland. The reunion is happening this weekend and I’m so excited to see all of my friends. In honour of the reunion, for today’s Friday Five I’m sharing some of my memories of Switzerland.

Bern, the capital, is a special place for a variety of reasons. The archways, for example, which fill the city’s historic treats are especially interesting to walk under. But Bern is not the only place you’ll find beautifully curved structures. Up on the mountain in Zermatt, there is a small church with an arched doorway. It’s such a pretty place to see.

While eating out can be expensive in Switzerland, when you get to custom design your food (well, burgers & pizza), then it ends up being a really entertaining experience.

The trains in Switzerland run on time, they’re clean, and they get you to pretty much wherever you need to go. The system is like no other I’ve ever experienced. Tickets aren’t cheap but there are various passes available which lower the cost per trip.

I’m pretty much a city girl but I absolutely love going for hikes in the mountains in Switzerland. At the beginning of my very first summer in Switzerland I was so clueless about following paths and knowing which direction to go. There was no need for me to worry as hiking trails in the mountains are very clearly marked. As long as you know what the markers mean you should be fine.

(I know – you were probably expecting me to include a photo of mountains, but for this city girl, a stack of wrapped-in-white hay bails really interests me.)

Finally, the goats! As if I haven’t spent enough time talking about goats on this blog, right? But they’re white and they’re Swiss so what’s not to love?

On my last visit to the city this summer my sister and I each had the BLT and it was delicious (although we thought it should have come on a bigger plate and cut in half). Unfortunately I don’t have a photo of the BLT, but I do have a photo of the fun piece of art that hung at the top of the stairs (at the Flatiron location if I remember correctly).

Vacation Update: NYC

Well – my three week mini tour of the USA is now over. After Chicago and Florida, I headed to Manhattan to spend time with my family. My nephews kept me thoroughly entertained and in between naps (theirs and mine), I experienced some of what the city has to offer.

Vacation Update: Florida

My mini tour of the United States continues to go well. Even though this is a Florida-related post, I’m actually posting from Manhattan where I’ll be spending a few days with family before I head back to “real life”.

The Florida portion of my vacation was the ultimate in terms of relaxation. I fully adopted Floridian ways and moved at a much slower pace than I’m used to. Loved every minute I spent at the pool, beach and shopping. Here are some photos from my trip.

Greetings from Florida! I thought I’d take a break from working on my tan (I know, hard work, right?) to post a vacation update.

Although my friend Shannon and I are in Florida at the moment, our US tour actually began in Chicago. We spent four amazing days eating our way through the city. We also saw some incredible art and made time for shopping too (of course!). This was my second time in Chicago and I’m happy to say that I loved it as much as I did the first time around. The city has so much to offer and the people are so friendly.

The Friday Five: Windows of Fredericton

If you’ve been reading White Cabana for a while then you will have noticed my fascination with white doors. On my recent trip to Fredericton, however, I was struck by the number of windows, not doors, on buildings around the downtown core and at the University of New Brunswick. This architectural detail really allows for maximum exposure to the beautiful outdoors.

After my visit to Gallery 78 in Fredericton, I walked over to the Ingrid Mueller gallery.

This modern gallery with white walls and a striking black ceiling definitely caught my attention. Inside, works of artists from the Atlantic provinces hang on the walls. Pieces of pottery and jewelry are also housed in this beautiful space.

Fredericton, NB: Food & Flowers

Did you know New Brunswick is the only constitutionally bilingual province in Canada? Oui, oui! Fredericton is the capital of the province and has a population of almost 86,000 (city centre).

The downtown core has a few good pubs  along with a couple of fine dining restaurants. After a few days of pub food at  Snooty Fox and Dolan’s, a friend and I went to The Blue Door which was a nice treat. I had the gorgonzola tenderloin (yummy!) and she had the yellow thai vegetable curry (which was full of creamy white goodness).

Although I was surprised to learn that there was no Starbucks downtown, on the recommendation of several people, on one afternoon I stopped in at Jonnie Java Roasters & Espresso Bar (in the Paradise Imports store) for some freshly roasted coffee. Although people told me “it was the best coffee”, I was a little skeptical. I have a thing for coffee, you may remember (read more here, here and here). Well, to my surprise, it was amazing! So amazing, in fact, that I had two cups of coffee – an espresso and a cappuccino – along with a delicious oat cake made with love by a group of ladies down the road. The coffee – and the people I met at Jonnie Java – definitely made my day!

Flowers were in full bloom last week in Fredericton and the lilacs – both white and purple – really caught my attention. So pretty!

Fredericton, NB: Gallery 78

While in Fredericton last week I was able to visit Gallery 78.

Situated in historic downtown Fredericton, Gallery 78 presents major solo and group exhibitions of local artists throughout the year. The building itself is stunning. The 19th century mansion has a corner turret, decorative shingles, beautiful stained glass windows and overlooks the Saint John river. And then there’s the inside…

Of course, I was most interested in all the white pieces at Gallery 78 and so, in anticipation of my visit, the Gallery 78 crew set up one room in the gallery as a white room – paintings, sculptures, furniture and jewelry all in white. It was so pretty!

The Friday Five: Eataly

Eataly New York: We sell what we cook. We cook what we sell.

After several years of planning, Oscar Farinetti, Mario Batali, and Lidia and Joe Bastianich partnered together to open Eataly in Manhattan in August 2010. Eataly is a space to shop for, to eat and to learn about delicious Italian food. According to the Eataly manifesto, food unites us all, brings us all together, and the source of the greatest joy is what happens around the dinner table. Indeed.

If you have already paid a visit to this immense food emporium, then you will have wandered around in amazement. Only steps from the Flatiron building, Eataly is an incredible source of authentic Italian food products and it encourages a very lively atmosphere (kind of reminds me of loud family dinners, actually). Although I found many of the products to be  over-priced, Eataly remains one of the few places, if not the only one, to carry such a variety of true Italian eats!

Today I am sharing with you five photos from Eataly that my mom and I took on one of our most recent visits to NYC. For us, and hopefully for you, these photos are great reminders of Italy.

Washington: The White House

This month I will be going to Washington, DC for five days. I can’t wait to see all the sites, especially the White House.

Chicago

I recently had the opportunity to visit Chicago for the first time. Oh, wow! What an absolutely amazing city! If you like art, architecture, food and fashion (or any combination of these things), then a visit to Chicago is a must! Chicago also offers plenty of comedic and musical entertainment. Although my five-day stay was work-related, I did manage to play tourist in between work obligations.

Although Chicago is often referred to as the windy city, I much prefer its other name, the white city. There are plenty of white buildings, doors and art around the city. You can imagine how happy I was to be surrounded by all of this white!

One of the highlights on this trip was the 75-minute architecture tour boat some of us took over a lunch break. We listened to the history of many (if not all!) buildings on either side of the river. Another amazing experience was eating tiramisu (yum) on the 96th floor of the John Hancock tower. The view from here was absolutely incredible (and just a tad scary).

Family Day Fun at Lake Placid

Family-day long weekend is coming up here in Canada and what better way to share it with your family and friends than on the mountains of Lake Placid. Here you can enjoy all your favorite Olympic winter sports such as skiing, skating, luging, and bobsledding. Toronto: Nadège

Just before the new year arrived, Johanne and I had a little pre-2011 celebration at Nadège. It was delicious and so very white! Nadège is beautiful, pristine and a breath of French goodness on Toronto’s Queen St. West. The pastries are edible pieces of art and if you sit at the back of the café you can watch the bakers at work. We did…and we were amazed at the macaron Christmas trees!

I really feel like I’m the last person to find out about What Katie Ate, a most amazing food blog based in Australia and written by the talented Katie Quinn Davies. The recipes are delicious as can be and they are complimented by beautiful photographs. This is one site that shouldn’t be missed.


Most recently, What Katie Ate published an absolutely gorgeous Christmas magazine (free for all of us to read!). It features beautiful menus, delicious recipes, and a food tour around Sydney, New York and elsewhere. Drizzled in are giveaways, gift ideas, and plenty of chocolate goodness! This issue should definitely be on your Christmas reading list!

We do love coffee art here on White Cabana and what would go well with coffee? Nutella cookies, I’d say. (My sister is probably drooling right now.)

If cranberries are more your thing – maybe you’d like to try out these macadamia beauties.

In addition to recipes, What Katie Ate featured a few chocolate shops in this issue and took us on a tour of some beautiful food stores and restaurants. Yum! Yum!

I just love how polenta is on this list of cupboard items. I thought only my family ate polenta.

Honestly – the 495 pages in this issue are stunning and well worth your time. Let me know what you think!

Material World: Sculpture to Environment at MASS MoCA

A friend sent me these interesting photos from one of the current exhibits at MASS MoCA. The artists of the exhibit, titled Material World: Sculpture to Environment, use ordinary objects (e.g., aluminum, rolls of paper, rope, fishing line) to alter the existing spaces within MASS MoCA’s galleries.

The artists, Michael Beutler, Orly Genger, Tobias Putrih, Alyson Shotz, Dan Steinhilber, and collaborative team Wade Kavanaugh and Stephen B. Nguyen, “create their work against – or in concert with – the backdrop of the museum’s reclaimed factory space, its history, and its own rich assemblage of brick walls, wooden columns, steel beams, and multiple layers of paint”.

The exhibit runs until the end of February 2011 so if you’re in Massachusetts between now and then, you may want to stop in and surround yourself with these impressive installations.

The Friday Five: Coffee

Ahh…coffee. I love the smell, the taste and the look. I love the feeling of drinking a coffee at my local café. I love meeting a friend and catching up on gossip at a new café or sitting alone on a patio with a cup in hand and watching the world go by.

I’m a fan of any kind of coffee…my choice usually depends on the time of day, the occasion and the café. I like a latte or cappuccino in the morning or as a mid-morning break. I enjoy a nice espresso after a good meal or as an afternoon pick-me-up.

And yes – sometimes the coffee I drink is so special, it deserves a photo! I’m happy to welcome you to today’s caffeine-filled Friday Five!

1. I was in Ascoli with my aunt, uncle and father. We stopped in at Caffe Meletti before hitting the farmer’s market. The Barista wrote me a special message in my little espresso. Sweet, right?

2. I was in Gstaad with my good friend Shannon. Going to Early Beck easily became an afternoon routine for us. We shared many laughs and gossiped for hours.

3. On one of my trips to Paris, I stopped in at a restaurant near the Palais Royale to write postcards and get re-energized!

4. I’ll never forget the morning adventure my good friend Boba and I had in Montreal. It was pouring rain outside but we were determined to have breakfast at La Croissanterie Figaro, which came highly recommended by a friend. Even though we were exhausted after a busy work week in Montreal, we stuck it out and we were rewarded with a beautiful breakfast and a couple of delicious cappuccinos.

5. I was on a 5-day vacation with Shannon (yes, the same friend) in Budapest and we stopped in for a coffee and strudel at the First Studel House of Pest. Our food and drinks were delish!

This pretty white children’s room is in a Swiss mountain chalet in the famous village of Gstaad, where I have been lucky enough to spend the last two months.  My time here has ended (leaving on a plane today actually) and I will soon be back to blogging from Canada. Sigh.
