A good boy

We’re still into animals this week, and really- what’s not to love about our sweet elephant?

Charles and Ray Eames were apparently really into elephants, having documented circuses and their adventures in India, both of which prominently feature the impressive animal. The Eames designed two prototypes made of molded plywood that was too complicated to produce for sale and so were displayed at the MoMA from 1945-6.

We hear that today, only one of the original elephants remains and is privately held by the Eames family. The copycat toy elephant we’re featuring below is made of white polypropylene and is created by the Vitra Design Museum and made in Germany. A perfect toy for the stylish toddler.

Music: The Rose

Long before YouTube was ever invented, Zia Rose, my aunt, recorded her version of Bette Midler’s The Rose on a cassette tape. I must have first heard her sing it when I was around 9 or 10 years old. It was so beautiful and it gave me chills. I remember that the cassette got passed around between different families so we could all have a chance to listen to it and I remember full family discussions about “the tape”. When I was learning to play the piano the sheet music for The Rose somehow wound up in our house and I always thought about it as Zia Rose’s song.

I am so extremely sad to share that Zia Rose passed away early this morning and while I’m not ready to write about it, I am happy to share this memory. I can hear her singing and I hope I never stop.

Some say love it is a river
that drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love it is a hunger
an endless aching need
I say love it is a flower
and you it’s only seed

It’s the heart afraid of breaking
that never learns to dance
It’s the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance
It’s the one who won’t be taken
who cannot seem to give
and the soul afraid of dying that never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been too long
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed
that with the sun’s love
in the spring
becomes the rose

Today, I would love it if you could read these lyrics or listen to Bette Midler’s version. When I eventually get a hold of the tape (surely it’s my turn) I will convert it do a digital file and upload it for everyone to hear.

Art & Food: 'wichcraft

Has anyone been to ‘wichcraft in NYC?

On my last visit to the city this summer my sister and I each had the BLT and it was delicious (although we thought it should have come on a bigger plate and cut in half). Unfortunately I don’t have a photo of the BLT, but I do have a photo of the fun piece of art that hung at the top of the stairs (at the Flatiron location if I remember correctly).
